Sandomierz, August 14, 1944: While the Germans were counterattacking a 
Soviet bridgehead to the south, the Soviets launched an attack to the 
north in the area of Sandomierz.

Aftermath: By August 18th the Russians had liberated the town of Sandomierz 
and surrounded two German divisions to the north of the town. The Soviets 
continued to beat back German counterattacks and expand the bridgehead until 
by the end of August it was about 47 miles wide and 30 miles deep.
